Reminiscence: From Memory to Matter, a ceramic exhibition by Canadian-Egyptian artist Basma Osama within the framework of Downtown Contemporary Arts Festival (D-CAF) – 13th edition.
The exhibition witnesses the role of reminiscence in shaping cultural identity–the often unconscious process by which significant memories are integrated into the present.
Reminiscence is central to artistic expression, enabling the adaption of elements from memory into a contemporary context. In the context of immigration, reminiscence acts as a vital link that allows cultural identities to not only be preserved, but to also evolve.
This exhibition draws a broader connection between cultural heritages and achievements, aiming to reproduce and pay tribute to the landscapes, scenes, textures, and symbols that marked Basma Osama’s childhood in Egypt and have, unconsciously, influenced her artistic practice and aesthetic choices. These works serve as a transcription of old and recent visual memories, reflecting the cultural diversity born from immigration.

(More details on timings and pick-up points to be announced).Basma Osama is a graduate of the Institut des Métiers d’Art du Cégep du Vieux Montréal (2003), currently based in Montreal. She founded her studio Ceramik B. in 2006—a space dedicated to the design and production of functional and decorative ceramic objects. Deeply in love with clay and the craft itself, Osama is drawn to simple and inviting forms—silhouettes, lines, textures, and curves, which enchant her with their naturalness and ease. Mineral and organic are two words that define her approach.
Having lived in Canada for three decades, and having learned ceramics from local potters and through Canadian approaches to the craft, her work explores a dialogue between memories of an Egyptian past and a contemporary Canadian reality. She seeks to capture and reinterpret visual fragments inspired by architecture, motifs, and natural landscapes that shape Egyptian cultural identity, while also working within a minimalist aesthetic.

الذاكرة محورية في التعبير الفني، تمكن الفنان من تكييف عناصر لتندمج في سياق معاصر. وفي سياق الهجرة، تعمل الذكرى كصلة حيوية تسمح للهويات الثقافية ليس فقط بالحفاظ على وجودها بل بالتطور أيضًا.
يرسم هذا المعرض علاقة أوسع بين التراث الثقافي والإنجازات، ويهدف إلى إعادة إنتاج وتكريم المناظر الطبيعية والمشاهد البصرية والأسطح والرموز التي ميزت طفولة بسمة أسامة في مصر، والتي أثرت بطريقة لا واعٍية في ممارساتها الفنية وخياراتها الجمالية. تُعدّ هذه الأعمال بمثابة نسخ من ذكريات بصرية قديمة وحديثة تعكس التنوع الثقافي الذي تولد من الهجرة.

خريجة معهد الفنون والحرف “سيجيب دو فيو مونتريال” Cégep du Vieux Montréal عام ٢٠٠٣ وتقيم حاليًا في مونتريال، كندا. أسست مرسمها Ceramik B عام ٢٠٠٦، وهو مساحة مخصصة لتصميم وإنتاج قطع خزفية وظيفية وجمالية. بعد أن عاشت في كندا لثلاثة عقود وتعلّمت الخزف على يد خزّافين محليين نقلوا لها أساليب الحرفة الكندية، تستكشف بسمة في أعمالها العلاقة بين ذكريات ماضيها المصري وواقعها الكندي المعاصر. وتسعى إلى التقاط وإعادة تفسير تفاصيل بصرية مستوحاة من الهندسة المعمارية والزخارف والمناظر الطبيعية التي تشكل الهوية الثقافية المصرية مع الالتزام بجماليات الفن المينيمالي.
