In her debut feature film “Sonne” (“Sun”), Austrian-Kurdish filmmaker Kurdwin Ayub tells the story of a Viennese teenager pushing the boundaries of her Muslim identity. A viral YouTube video showcases Yesmin and her non-Muslim friends dancing in hijab, making them famous overnight, especially in the Kurdish Muslim community. While Nati and Bella are intrigued by this new world, Yesmin distances herself more and more from her culture. Along her journey of self-discovery, not only do her friendships crumble, but her entire familiar world as well.
