GIS AS A TOOL FOR HERITAGE SITE MANAGEMENT
This abstract provides a concise overview of the integration of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in the management of archaeological sites, highlighting its pivotal role in enhancing data analysis and interpretation of heritage site information. As archaeological investigations increasingly rely on advanced technologies, GIS has emerged as an indispensable tool for organizing, visualizing, and analyzing spatial data related to cultural heritage.
The utilization of GIS in archaeological site management enables professionals to create detailed spatial databases, integrating various layers of information such as excavation data, artifact distributions, landscape features, and historical documentation.
This holistic approach facilitates a comprehensive understanding of the site, fostering more accurate interpretations and informed decision-making.
Moreover, GIS facilitates the development of spatial models that aid in predicting potential archaeological features, identifying patterns, and assessing the significance of different areas within a site. This predictive modeling contributes to efficient resource allocation, allowing archaeologists to focus efforts on high-priority zones for further exploration and conservation.
The training course will cover fundamental GIS concepts and practical applications tailored specifically for archaeological site management. Participants will gain hands-on experience in creating and managing spatial databases, conducting spatial analyses, and utilizing GIS tools to address real-world challenges in archaeological research and preservation. The course aims to empower archaeologists and heritage professionals with the skills needed to harness the full potential of GIS in the management and preservation of archaeological sites.
Course Learning Outcomes:
• Understand what is geographical information Systems, simple database, projection systems and mapping techniques
• Practice the usage of GIS to manage meta data related to heritage sites and/or artifacts
• Understand spatial distribution of heritage sites and artifacts with respect to their environment
• Learn about practical approaches of heritage databasing and site management
• Have hands on experience and applications of GIS and database to various heritage sites and artifacts.

Prof. Dr. Yasser Elshayeb
Prof. Yasser Elshayeb: Professor of Rock Engineering Applications in Heritage and Archaeology. The American University in Cairo
Elshayeb is a graduate of Cairo University in 1990 with a degree in Mining Engineering and had a PhD from “Nancy School of Mines” in France on the Contribution of Fuzzy Logic to Geotechnical Risk Assessment of some Ancient Tombs at the Valley of the Kings in Egypt.Prof. Elshayeb have always been active in the field of Cultural Heritage Management and Conservation, Risk Assessment, and Project management through the participation and management of several international projects in those fields. He was also the Director of the Egyptian Center for Documentation of Cultural and Natural Heritage (CULTNAT) between 2012 and 2014.
He has been active in teaching and research in various Engineering and heritage subjects: rock engineering, rock mechanics, data analysis, cultural heritage management, risk assessment, and project management.
Since 2006, Elshayeb was highly involved in setting up the Euro Mediterranean policies and dialogues on higher education, research, innovation, and culture, as a focal point of many Euro Mediterranean programs in Egypt and presided many senior officials’ meetings within the Euro Mediterranean space.
Since his early years, Elshayeb has developed a passion for various fields of science and knowledge dissemination.
