Music for Wire and Tape | Lecture & Discussion with Petr Ferenc

 If you are a musician or interested in music, join a music lecture & discussion accompanied by some samples with Petr Ferenc, the head of Documentation Centre for Popular Music and New Media at the National Museum in Prague, Czechia.

 Petr’s research interests include the issues of sound carriers as recording and artistic media, sensuality in the perception of music and underground musical trends invisible from the heights of pop music. He is the editor-in-chief of the music magazine HIS Voice (run by the Czech Music Information Centre) and a turntablist. He co-organized and curated the concert series Stimul and Wakushoppu. He is the author of a book on krautrock and editor of a monograph on electro-acoustic composition in Czechoslovakia.

Electroacoustic and concrete music were born in radio studios, whether in Paris, Cologne or Cairo, where one of the pioneers of the genre, Halim El-Dabh (1921-2017), worked. In Czechoslovakia, electroacoustic music began to emerge under government supervision in radio and film studios. In conjunction with film, it gained fame mainly thanks to the soundtracks of composer Zdeněk Liška (1922-1983), but many works are waiting to be rediscovered. The task set by the National Museum in Prague is implemented through databases, digitisation, public access and publications. Can parallels be found between the Czechoslovak and Egyptian environments and conditions for the creation of electroacoustic compositions?

The event will be held in English and is part of the Year of Czech Music Program in Egypt.
