A Winter in Egypt 1921-22

– Maria Mogensen, Denmark’s first female museum curator

Maria Mogensen (1882-1932) was the first female museum curator and Egyptologist in Denmark. In 1910 she became the assistant of the Egyptologist Valdemar Schmidt (1836-1925), who helped Brewer Carl Jacobsen (1842-1914) build his Egyptian collection at the Glyptotek in Copenhagen and she eventually succeeded Schmidt as museum curator. During the Winter of 1921-22 Miss Mogensen went to Egypt for the first time, which was a great experience for her, studying at the Egyptian Museumin Cairo and visiting sites and excavations. We get a vivid picture of her adventures in Egypt as she wrote letters home and when she returned the Danish newspapers were eager to interview her about her travels.

Presented by Dr Tine Bagh.

Tine Bagh holds an MA in Egyptology and a PhD in Near Eastern Archaeology, focusing on Egypt. Since 2009 she has worked at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, and since 2015 as Curator of the Egyptian Collection.

She has published material from excavations in Egypt and Sudan, curated exhibitions on Amarna, and conducted fieldwork at the Seti Temple in Qurna and at Tell ed-Dabʿa, specializing in pottery. She has lectured at the University of Copenhagen and published widely, and is currently working on a biography of Maria Mogensen.
