A film by Mohamed Rashad
As two brothers navigate their new roles in a factory, they begin to question whether their father’s death there was truly accidental.
Synopsis:
Inspired by real events, THE SETTLEMENT follows two brothers—23-year-old troublemaker Hossam and his 12-year-old brother Maro — living in a marginalized community in Alexandria who are offered jobs by the local factory after their father’s untimely death in a workplace accident as compensation for their loss in lieu of pursuing legal action. As they navigate their new roles, they begin to question whether their father’s death was truly accidental.
About the Director:
Mohamed Rashad is an Egyptian director, writer, and producer who graduated from the University of Alexandria with a degree in civil engineering. After completing a two-year filmmaking workshop at the Jesuit Cultural Film School of Alexandria, he directed two short fiction films: FROM AFAR (2005) and MAXIM (2007). He later served as an assistant director on several notable films, including COMING FORTH BY DAY, directed by Hala Lotfy, with whom he co-founded Hassala Films.
In 2016, he directed his first feature documentary film LITTLE EAGLES, which premiered at the Dubai International Film Festival and won the Best Documentary Award at the Malmö Arab Film Festival and the Jury Award at the Luxor African Film Festival. Later in 2019, he served as a producer on Ramez Youssef’s feature documentary THE PROFESSION, which received a Black Iris Award-Special Mention at the Amman International Film Festival.
His feature film debut is THE SETTLEMENT, which is set to world premiere as part of the Perspectives section of the 75th Berlin International Film Festival.
Director’s Statement:
Generally, I find myself drawn to industrial spaces, whether visually or through the stories and events that take place inside. I find them highly cinematic. However, Egyptian films rarely explore these spaces despite their rich cinematic potential, their representation of a significant segment of Egyptian society and how these spaces carry a deep social weight, serving as a major reflection of reality.
The idea for the film began when I randomly met a young man who told me about his father, a construction worker for a company who tragically passed away in his shift. After the father’s passing, the same company offered him a job, and he accepted, choosing to work in the very place where his father died. This encounter opened up many questions for me—about harsh social circumstances, family dynamics, and particularly the father-son bond.
During the preproduction and production of the film, I wanted to authentically document a rough reality that also carries underlying layers of softness and fragility. I had to structure every aspect of the film on this foundation, starting with the choice of filming locations—spaces that possess sharpness and rawness yet at the same time a certain beauty. The same applied to casting actors whose faces are sculpted with hardship, exhaustion, and anger but who also carry looks of empathy, love, and unspoken needs. Similarly, my approach to cinematography and editing was driven by the desire to create a contrast between toughness and tenderness.
I also wanted to work with new actors, ones unfamiliar to the audience, so viewers could engage with them as real characters rather than as performers. To enhance this sense of realism, I also cast real workers in key roles and also as extras, blending professional actors with non-actors to create a seamless authentic cinematic representation of these characters’ realities.

Reviews:
“It is an excellent film, capable of telling a setting and its miseries more human than material. Above all, he deals with work, a great thing removed from western cinema for decades now.”
Massimiliano Schiavoni-Quinlan: https://quinlan.it/2025/02/18/the-settlement/
“You appreciate the film’s photography, which is very careful in telling a misadapted reality, and you can see the personal imprinting of the director, who has been able to gather his own experience to show something unique and original.”
Verdiana Paolucci-Cinematografe: https://www.cinematographe.it/…/the-settlement…/
“Rashad’s film’s strongest feature is the performances by the non-professional leads, Shukr and Islam… It’s worth immersing yourself in a world where happiness is rare and the pride in a younger brother’s eyes is the ultimate reward.”
Ola Salwa-Cineuropa: https://cineuropa.org/en/newsdetail/474087
“Director Mohamed Rashad’s working-class drama ‘The Settlement’, a visually impressive folk tale portraying a young man’s desperate attempts at social integration, is a milestone for the Egyptian film industry at the Berlinale.”
Adham Youssef-The Film Verdict: https://thefilmverdict.com/the-settlement/…
THE SETTLEMENT is an Egyptian feature film that deserves to be celebrated. It significantly enriches the recent landscape of independent Egyptian cinema, affirming that there are still many untold stories.
Mohamed Tarek-Chorum: https://chroum.com/…/%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%B3%D8%AA%D8…
“The Settlement marks a significant step forward for director Mohamed Rashad as he continues to explore ideas he previously addressed in his documentary film. With noticeable advancements in narration, picture, and cast direction, Berlinale’s selection of this film as the first Arab entry in the newly launched competition is both logical and fair.”
Ahmed Shawky-Fasllah: https://fasllah.com/%d8%a7%d9%84%d9%85%d8%b3%d8%aa%d8…/…
“A promising debut that is more interesting than a smooth mainstream product.”
Lida Bach-Moviebreak (Germany):https://www.moviebreak.de/film/the-settlement
“THE SETTLEMENT presents a tragic character haunted by two pasts: his own and that of his father, which the director successfully conveys visually.”
