The Legacy of Royal Majesty: The Conservation of the Mausoleum of Sultan Qaitbey in Cairo’s City of the Dead
Join us for a special lecture by Agnieszka Dobrowolska, ARCHiNOS Director who oversaw the recent conservation of the Mausoleum of Sultan al-Ashraf Qaitbey.
Following the official opening in July 2026, this lecture offers a timely opportunity to look behind the scenes of the conservation of one of Cairo’s most magnificent Mamluk monuments. Agnieszka will share the story of the project, tracing the process from the detailed study and documentation of the mausoleum to the conservation of its stone dome, richly decorated interior, mihrab, and other historic features.
The project, carried out by ARCHiNOS and supported by the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation, has brought this extraordinary monument back to life and opened a new chapter in its history. At the end of the lecture, Agnieszka will lead the audience on a special visit to the newly reopened mausoleum, offering the opportunity to experience the results of the conservation work firsthand.
