The Dance Of Enkidu On The Collapsing Mountain
A performance (work in progress) by Bassam Abou Diab – Lebanon
The work emerges from an encounter between contemporary dance and electronic music, and the traditions of dabke and zajal. Drawing on a living archive of artistic creations and personal experiences shaped by the Lebanese Civil War, it weaves together memory, history, and performance.
The stage becomes a site of play and experimentation, where inherited narratives are dismantled and reassembled, allowing vulnerability and resilience, fragility and strength, to coexist.
Through movement, sound, and poetry, the performance investigates the embodiment of heroism and imagined victories, while questioning the choices individuals make in times of war and danger. It reflects on the possibility of surviving and resisting the narratives imposed by systems that transform human lives into fuel for conflict.

Production & Development
The Dance of Enkidu on the Collapsing Mountain has been developed through three artistic residencies supported by RAMPE Theater (Stuttgart), Curcuito CLAPS / Brescia, and Beirut Physical Lab / Beirut.
This is the tenth edition of the Theater Is A Must Festival under the theme “Return”. We revisit concepts, art forms, influential moments in our contemporary political and social history, and myths. Through our artistic choices, we will create a dramaturgical line of concepts and issues that we would like our contemporary theater to address in the 21st century. Through Egyptian, Arab and European contemporary theater performances, we will organize a contemporary theatrical experience that includes the desire to return, pause and reflect on defining moments, pausing to deconstruct these contexts through theater that questions the past and engages with our recent history. We celebrate atypical and non-traditional theatrical forms and continue to imagine our vision of a theater that transcends pity, fear and catharsis.
