The Revolutionary Trilogy: Theatre in Times of Uprising, War, and Exile – Masterclass with Sulayman Al Bassam (Kuwait – UK)
On reconnecting theatre with its foundational role and its vital impact on the present day…
The masterclass “The Revolutionary Trilogy: Theatre in Times of Uprising, War, and Exile” serves as a direct artistic engagement with our contemporary history and its transformations, viewed through the lens of one of the most prominent figures in contemporary Arab theatre.
The masterclass explores Sulayman Al-Bassam’s works—specifically In the Boiling State, I M E D E A, and Silence—examining how these texts trace the trajectory of the Arab world: from the Arab Spring through war, displacement, and diaspora, to genocide. It employs a dramaturgical vision rooted in polyphony, the reimagining of myth, combining autobiography, and exploring the concept of silence. In doing so, it seeks to forge new theatrical forms that transcend conventional stereotypes, opening up fresh possibilities for both the creation and reception of theatre.
About the Speaker
Sulayman Al-Bassam is an award-winning Kuwaiti playwright, theatre director, and cultural entrepreneur, widely recognized as one of the world’s leading contemporary Arab theatre makers. His work is characterized by its poetic density, his oeuvre interrogates the pluralities of identity, history, war, language and individual sovereignty. Often set against the backdrop of civilizational overlap and tension between the Arab-Islamic world and the West. Collaborating with multinational performers and creative teams, Al Bassam’s productions are characterised by a radical approach to text and provocative combinations of content and form.
Writing in English and directing in Arabic, English, French and German, Al Bassam’s English language play texts are published by Oberon Modern Plays and Methuen/Bloomsbury.
Al Bassam was invited as Artist-in-Residence as part of NYU Gallatin’s Visiting Global Faculty Program (2015 & 2017) and to the Sundance Director’s Retreat (Arles, 2016). He gave the keynote address at NYU’s Theatre Without Borders conference (2015) and was a speaker at the World Economic Forum (Davos, 2012). He regularly acts as a juror for international arts grant-making bodies like the Rolex Mentor Program and Arab Fund for Arts and Culture. Study of his work forms part of curricula at universities in the USA and the Middle East.
The 2007 premiere of Richard III: An Arab Tragedy, his adaptation of the eponymous play at the Royal Shakespeare Company, and his 2013 Ritual for a Metamorphosis by Syrian playwright Saadallah Al Wannous for La Comedie Francaise in Paris marked historic moments in the presentation of Arabic language texts to world audiences.
Al Bassam’s English language play texts are published by Oberon Modern Plays and Methuen/Bloomsbury. Study of his work forms part of higher education curricula at Berkeley University, California, U.S.A; Boston University, Middle East and has been the subject of several PhD Theses in the past 5 years.
He has given numerous seminars on his work in Cairo, Tokyo, Tunisia, Kuwait, and the UK.
A defining element of Al Bassam’s work is his adaptive transposition of classic texts into the landscape of present-day politics and identity. Between 2001 and 2011 the plays that form The Arab Shakespeare Trilogy (Bloomsbury, 2014) were developed by Al Bassam with his theatre company SABAB. More recently, his work has focused on the development of original texts exploring physical and imaginary borders, and a new cycle of plays inspired by ancient texts.
Other works include: UR, a contemporary adaptation of the Sumerian lamentation, co-produced by Rezidenztheater, the State Theatre of Bavaria, in Munich in 2018; Petrol Station, premiered at Kennedy Center in Washington DC in March 2017; the series of female monologues, In the Eruptive Mode (International tour 2015-17), I M E D E A (2021-24) an award winning contemporary re-imagining of the Medea myth and MUTE an examination of the limits of political speech set against the backdrop of the explosion of the port of Beirut (2023- 2025).
Al Bassam is also the founder of FIKAR, a research space and arts residency on the island of Failaka, Kuwait.
Theater Is A Must Festival tenth edition “Return” 6-17 November 2026
This is the tenth edition of the Theater Is A Must Festival under the theme “Return”. We revisit concepts, art forms, influential moments in our contemporary political and social history, and myths. Through our artistic choices, we will create a dramaturgical line of concepts and issues that we would like our contemporary theater to address in the 21st century. Through Egyptian, Arab and European contemporary theater performances, we will organize a contemporary theatrical experience that includes the desire to return, pause and reflect on defining moments, pausing to deconstruct these contexts through theater that questions the past and engages with our recent history. We celebrate atypical and non-traditional theatrical forms and continue to imagine our vision of a theater that transcends pity, fear and catharsis.

(Methuen/Bloomsbury).
