A Performance by Bassam Abou Diab (Lebanon)
Under the Flesh is a contemporary dance performance rooted in the experience of a body that has lived through four consecutive wars in South Lebanon, in 1993, 1996, 2000, and 2006. Faced with repeated danger, the body begins to invent its own dance, with imaginary rules and techniques that help it deal with fear and find a way to survive.
Through dance, storytelling inspired by the hakawati tradition, and live music, the performance brings the audience closer to the experience of a person living under the threat of death. The story is told through the body, movement, and narration, sometimes with lightness and humor, revealing the human experience of war beyond its political and news-based image.

This is the tenth edition of the Theater Is A Must Festival under the theme “Return”. We revisit concepts, art forms, influential moments in our contemporary political and social history, and myths. Through our artistic choices, we will create a dramaturgical line of concepts and issues that we would like our contemporary theater to address in the 21st century. Through Egyptian, Arab and European contemporary theater performances, we will organize a contemporary theatrical experience that includes the desire to return, pause and reflect on defining moments, pausing to deconstruct these contexts through theater that questions the past and engages with our recent history. We celebrate atypical and non-traditional theatrical forms and continue to imagine our vision of a theater that transcends pity, fear and catharsis.
