#VisitQaitbey Walking Tour: Sultans & Tombs: Uncovering Mamluk City of the Dead
Join us for a special heritage walk through the part of Cairo’s “City of the Dead” known as the Desert of the Mamluks, an extraordinary historic landscape.
Led by conservation architect Jarosław Dobrowolski, this walk delves into the legacy of the Mamluk rulers and dignitaries whose extraordinary monuments continue to define the skyline of the Desert of the Mamluks. Explore the area’s rich architectural heritage, including the magnificent complex of Sultan Qaitbey, while discovering the broader historic landscape in which these remarkable monuments have endured to remain an integral part of contemporary Cairo.
As part of MASQ’s 2026–2027 season, Past in the Present, Present in the Past, the walk invites participants to experience the historic landscape not as a relic frozen in time, but as a living environment where multiple layers of history continue to intersect with and shape the present.

Organised by ARCHiNOS Architecture and the Sultan Foundation, this event opens Past in the Present, Present in the Past, a season of walks, exhibitions, talks, performances, concerts and other cultural activities exploring the relationship between heritage, contemporary life and the future.
